Dear Readers, In the first chapter of this book, I told parents that their children are their greatest gift to the planet. I can confess to you that Challenge to Excellence was never financially successful. I almost always worked “outside the system.” I do not have a pension. I did not make millions of dollars. Thank goodness for my successful husband.
By many standards, the world would say I’m a failure. I disagree. I have made a difference in the lives of my family and my students. I am not perfect—no one is. But the validation I have received makes my heart sing. I am eternally grateful that I have used my gifts and talents to the best of my ability.
I turned seventy-five this year, and my sons gave me the greatest gift. I told my husband that I did not want a big party but to spend my birthday at the Little River Inn in Mendocino. The next week, we celebrated with a lovely family party. I made a beautiful Shutterfly book with the touching texts I received from our sons on the morning of my birthday. Reading those texts, my husband and I shed a few tears. When you know how much they love and appreciate you, it makes it all worthwhile.
Peter Ryan (youngest son): Mom, you taught us the importance of unconditional love, and as a parent, I realize this is the most valuable experience that I can pass on to my kids. Thank you for always being there for all of us. You are the glue that holds us together.
Stephen (oldest son):
I wanted to thank you for teaching us to love, how to be great parents, and how to always stick together through thick and thin. I feel so blessed to be a part of our incredible journey together as a family. Thanks for all you do, all you have always done for all of us. I love you and want you to know that I appreciate all of your unconditional love.
Michael (middle son): Our family’s journey together has been an amazing ongoing experience. You and Dad have taught us that, in the end, what is most important is family and our love and support for one another. Life is not supposed to be easy, and God gives you only the challenges you can handle, overcome, and come out the other side a better person. You and Dad, through all your trials and tribulations, have always displayed a positive and compassionate attitude.
Thank you for being a great example.
When I read those texts, I know that my life has been a success for me. This is what I want for you. I want you to experience the joy of knowing that you did what was best for your kids and the people in your life.
I know that if you practice the information in this book, someday, when youare myage, you will be able to look back with great joy and know that your legacy is your talented, beautiful children and that you have made the world a better place.
I am most blessed. So now it’s your turn. And when you are old, you can write your own success story. Good luck. God bless you, and let me know about your progress.
I would love to hear from you and would appreciate all feedback.
Kathleen
